Why not another blog post about biking?

This week is Bike to Work week at eBay, so I opted to start my summer biking adventures again. I'm recovering from my achilles tendon surgery on schedule, though the surgery was more extensive than originally estimated and the recovery schedule is now much longer. I've needed to get doing something aerobic again and the Doc said that biking is a "safe" exercise. So I thought why not kick off my return to regular exercise by riding the 16 miles to work.

Now I know what you're thinking, and yes, I'd have to say that I'm in the worst shape of my life given that I haven't been able to really do anything aerobic since January. (Okay, I could go swimming, but I have to pay for that, ugh!) And yes, this was another bad idea, right up there next to biking to work in a walking cast, but it always makes for a good story, right?

So, when I'm in decent shape, and the head wind isn't too bad, then I can do the ride to work in 45 - 60 minutes on average. So guess how long it took me this morning? That's right, 2 hours! And by the end of the ride, I was barely pedaling. But I made it, I didn't die, and I can still walk... barely. Here are some of the pics:

I know that you're thinking now, "Pics of his ride into work this morning? What a dweeb!" Yes, I am a dweeb, but proud of it and there's a method to my madness, and it's also the reason I thought I'd blog about my ride. Read on.

For Bike to Work week, eBay is holding a "Why I deserve a new bike" contest. The rules are basically submit some form of media explaining or demonstrating why you deserve a new bike and the winning entry gets this: Specialized bike

I've been hoping to convert my old mountain bike into a commuter, but hey, if someone gives me a free bike, I'll take it. My problem was that I didn't know why I would deserve a new bike. (I probably don't deserve one, but why not let's pretend that I do for now.) Anyway, the deadline for the contest was today at noon, and I hadn't thought of anything creative to submit until I was about halfway through my commute this morning. As I was riding along, I thought, "Hey, what if I documented my ride into work, and show how I would be more likely to do it every day if I had a new bike." After I came up with the idea, my next thought was "Dang, I need a camera so I could take some pics of the ride." Then, "Well goodnes me, why I have a camera on my cell phone!" Ain't technology grand! So I pulled out my phone and commenced shooting. After getting to work, I compiled the best pics into a powerpoint and submitted it for the contest. Now I wait with my fingers crossed.

Don't get me wrong, as old as she is, I love my old Jamis, and she does the job even with her fat nubby tires, but again, we're back to the concept of why not get a free bike? Plus I won't have to convert her into a commuter, and since Rach doesn't have her own bike, we'd both have a bike for family rides. (Please note that though Rachel would get the old bike, this is only because it's too small for me. I got it when I was in high school so I've grown a bit (not all sideways), and it was too small to begin with because we didn't understand what comfortable meant back when front shocks had 2 inches of travel on a good day. Luv ya Rach!)

So, I don't have anywhere to host the presentation right now, but I'll try to get it added soon and post the link.

out.
